A 78-year-old woman has died after she was struck in Jewett City by a driver who state police said went off the road and hit a sign before hitting her, then crashing into a building and two vehicles.
The driver of a BMW was heading north on Main Street in Griswold around 3:44 p.m. Thursday when he crossed over to the other side of the road and went onto the sidewalk, according to police.
They said he hit a Department of Transportation street sign and then he struck 78-year-old Bernice LaRochelle, of Lisbon, who died at the scene.
After hitting LaRochelle, the driver hit a U.S. post office building and two vehicles, officials said.
