A 78-year-old woman has died after she was struck in Jewett City by a driver who state police said went off the road and hit a sign before hitting her, then crashing into a building and two vehicles.

The driver of a BMW was heading north on Main Street in Griswold around 3:44 p.m. Thursday when he crossed over to the other side of the road and went onto the sidewalk, according to police.

They said he hit a Department of Transportation street sign and then he struck 78-year-old Bernice LaRochelle, of Lisbon, who died at the scene.

After hitting LaRochelle, the driver hit a U.S. post office building and two vehicles, officials said.

He was taken to William W. Backus Hospital to be treated.

State police are investigating.

Anyone with information is asked to call Trooper Timothy Wengloski or Trooper Christopher Brett at 860-848-6500, extension 5.

The road was still closed for several hours.
