Sinkhole Closes Part of Route 174 in New Britain

A Sinkhole in New Britain is much bigger than it originally appeared.

A sinkhole that is between six- to eight-feet wide and 12 feet deep has closed part of Route 174 in New Britain.

A police officer who responded to a minor crash noticed the hole and called for road crews to check it out. While the hole only appears to be about 8-inches wide, it is much bigger underneath.

Route 174 is closed between Stanley Street and Cottage Place and will likely be closed through the day.

Crews are excavating the road to determine the cause and make repairs.
