Portland schools to have 2-hour delay on Tuesday after reported threat

Schools in Portland will have a delayed opening on Tuesday after the middle and high schools were in a lockdown for several hours on Monday.

The police department said the schools were in a lockdown due to an online threat. Students were let out of school shortly before 5 p.m.

All schools in town will run on a two-hour delay Tuesday. Superintendent Charles Britton said the delay will allow the district time to prepare for students' return.

Portland police said they were made aware of a threat through the Say Something app, which claimed that a seventh grader at the middle school had a gun and was going to shoot people.

Investigators identified the student who made the threat and determined that it was a hoax.

Authorities said an anonymous caller claimed to be a tipster, but allegedly made up the threat.

"This has been a long afternoon for everyone involved. Thank you for your patience," police said on Facebook.

Britton said there will be additional counselors on-site available to students.

All other schools in town were put in a shelter in place. The investigation remains ongoing.
