More than 100 parents packed the Stafford Elementary auditorium Thursday night to sound off about the school board’s decision to close an elementary school.
Staffordville Elementary is home to about 200 pre-K thru first grade students.
On Monday, the board of education approved $447,574 in cuts which includes closing the school.
"This is extremely short-sighted and it's going to cost more in the long run," said parent Chris Rhodes. "I couldn't think of a worse idea."
Parents believe they've been left in the dark.
"I wish we had more time to communicate with the community," said budget committee chairman Stephen Szymanski. "The board's decision is final."
Pre-K and Kindergarten students will attend West Stafford Elementary, while first graders will be moved to Stafford Elementary.
School leaders assured parents that there is room for all of the re-located students.
"If you were to come in here today, there is a smile on every single child's face," said principal Henry Skala.
The budget will go to voters in May but school leaders cautioned parents that if the measure is voted down, there will be more painful cuts.
