People living near the Oyster River in West Haven have been collecting dead animals from the water.
The New Haven Register reports that a flame-suppressing chemical foam spilled into the water after an equipment malfunction at Yale University's West Campus on Tuesday.
A state Department of Environmental Protection official tells The Register the white foam is not dangerous to people, but can kill wildlife. The official also says the chemical cannot be skimmed out because it's water-soluble and mixes with the river water.
"The kids play here and there's wildlife," a neighbor named Thomas Ryan tells the Register. "This is wrong for the environment, and it's killing everything."
Messages left for Yale were not returned to The Register.
