A woman has been found dead inside of an apartment that caught fire in Avon Wednesday evening.

A 73-year-old woman was found dead inside of an apartment that caught fire in Avon Wednesday evening and police have identified her as Mary Jenson.

Police said they responded to Avon Place Apartments for a reported fire around 3:45 p.m.

Firefighters evacuated residents, and said the blaze was contained to one unit. People in areas unaffected by the fire have since been allowed back inside.

One person said her friend called 911 after seeing the fire on the first floor in a nearby unit.

“Smoke in the hall. Yes. Definitely saw the smoke and smelled it ahead of time when the alarm went off,” Joanne Madsen, of Avon, said.

Another fire broke out at the same apartment complex in April 2024, leaving dozens of families displaced.

Tenants are in disbelief about the news, especially after a major fire forced dozens of families out of another building on property in April of last year.

“I’m not sure what to think. I mean, I’m glad the alarms went off and works,” Alyssa Berthiaume, of Avon, said.

The State Police Fire and Explosives Unit and the Avon fire marshal’s office are investigating.
