Police are investigating after a woman was shot and killed during a fight in Meriden on Monday night.

A woman was shot and killed during a fight in Meriden on Monday night, according to police, and parts of West Main Street and Colony Street are closed as the investigation continues on Tuesday.

Officers responded to the area of 161 State St. just after 10 p.m. Monday to investigate reports of gunshots and they found a woman who had been shot. She died at the scene, police said.

Police have identified the victim as 28-year-old Beth Ndwiga, of Meriden.

The mayor's office said this was the first homicide this year in Meriden.

According to police, the victim and the alleged shooter were in a dispute and were known to each other.

The investigation is ongoing and West Main Street has been blocked off at Colony Street since 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday. No information is available on when it will be open.

Officials said they blocked West Main Street off at Colony Street, preventing traffic from heading west past the police department. Meriden Mayor Kevin Scarpati said part of West Main Street is an active scene.

Police are also blocking traffic from Colony Street up to Grove Street until the investigation is complete and they are asking people to avoid the area.

Early in the investigation, police asked people to avoid the area of State Street where the shooting happened, as well as the Meriden Green. The Meriden Green reopened to the public around noon, according to police.

Service was shut down at the Meriden train station from around 11 p.m. Monday to around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the mayor. He said there was no major impact on commuters.

Buses were rerouted as well.

The State Street CT Transit bus stop was not available for pickups or drop-offs, but it reopened around 3 a.m., according to the mayor.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Detective John Wagner at (203) 630-6334.
