NBC 5’s Larry Collins has the latest on the ongoing investigation into the shooting at the Dallas ISD school.
What to Know
According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Dallas ISD police said five students were shot at Wilmer-Hutchins High School on Tuesday. Dallas Fire-Rescue said Wednesday that only four people had been shot and one person was hospitalized for anxiety.
DFR said the conditions of the shooting victims range from serious to non-life-threatening, and the victims were 15- to 18-year-olds.
Officials have confirmed a suspect is in custody. The suspect has been identified as 17-year-old Tracy Denard Haynes Jr.
Officials have not said what led to the outbreak of gunfire.
The affidavit says school surveillance video showed an unidentified student let Haynes in through an unsecured door at 1:03 p.m., and moments later, he began firing indiscriminately at five students.
In April 2024, a student was shot in the leg in a WHHS classroom after a student was able to bring a gun into the building, bypassing security and metal detectors.
Five students were hospitalized after a shooting inside Wilmer-Hutchins High School in Dallas on Tuesday afternoon, officials say. The school is the same one where a student was injured in a shooting in a classroom last year.
Officials with Dallas Fire-Rescue confirmed Wednesday that four boys were shot and a 14-year-old girl was hospitalized for anxiety. The ages of the shooting victims were 15 to 18, and they had injuries that ranged from serious to non-life-threatening. Of the five people hospitalized on Tuesday, only two remained hospitalized on Wednesday, DFR said.
In a brief news conference Tuesday afternoon, Dallas ISD police and district officials said the gunman had been identified but was at large. Hours later, the suspect surrendered and was arrested. The suspect, identified by police as 17-year-old Tracy Denard Haynes Jr., is currently in the Dallas County Jail, held on a $600,000 bond. It's unclear if Haynes has obtained an attorney.
"Today, as we all know, the unthinkable has happened," said Dallas ISD Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde. "And quite frankly, this is just becoming way too familiar, and it should not be familiar."
District leaders said classes would be canceled at the high school through the rest of the week, and counselors would be made available to anyone struggling after the shooting.

‘You don't ever just get used to this,' Dallas ISD superintendent said after shooting
Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde gave a brief news conference after a shooting injured four people at Wilmer-Hutchins High School on Tuesday afternoon.
Elizalde said just after 5 p.m. Tuesday that all students had been reunited with parents and guardians and that school was canceled at the high school for the rest of the week. Elizalde said mental health counselors would be available to students and staff.
"You don't ever just get used to this and I'm very aware of that," Elizalde said. "It certainly weighs very heavy on my heart. But I can't begin to imagine, as a parent myself, I'm trying to put myself in those shoes."
The superintendent said a Dallas ISD police officer was at the school when the shooting occurred and responded within two minutes. The Dallas ISD police were soon joined by city police in Wilmer, Hutchins and Dallas, the Texas DPS, Dallas County Sheriff's Office, county constables and other agencies.
Additional officers will be on campus when classes resume next week.

Suspect identified in Wilmer-Hutchins shooting
The Dallas ISD police said a suspect in the shooting has been identified but is not in custody.
The shooter's current location is not known and their name has not been released to the public.
Police also did not say anything about what may have happened in the moments leading up to the shooting or share any details about how the gun got into the building.
Police said they confirmed the gun used in the shooting did not enter the building through "regular intake," when the students enter the building in the morning through metal detectors and are subject to a bag search.
Earlier in the afternoon, Dallas City Councilman Tennell Atkins said someone must have let someone in with the gun. Police officials have not confirmed that assessment or offered an alternative explanation.
