Thousands of students protesting education cuts and high tuition converged on California’s state Capitol on Monday. "They say cut back; we say fight back," the group chanted. Police later arrested 68 people who refused to leave the Capitol. Most will be charged with trespassing, the California Highway Patrol said. Tuition has nearly doubled in the past five years to $13,000 for in-state undergraduates at University of California school and $6,400 at California State University schools. Gov. Jerry Brown said the protests showed the need for state voters to approve a tax increase he’s proposed for a vote in November.
