Utility Companies Preparing for Possibility of Power Outages

Eversource is bringing in additional crews and resources to Connecticut and anticipates up to 125,000 customers, or about 10%, could experience power outages in the upcoming storm.

Eversource said it is working around the clock to make sure there is a large number of crews to respond to any damage or outages that may be caused by the weather.

By Friday, there will be around 300 line crews and 100 troubleshooting crews across the state.

Eversource says it expects tree limbs to come down. It's possible full trees will also come down.

The company has declared an emergency response level five starting Thursday at noon. That means they anticipate up to 3,000 spots that will need restoration and up to 125,000 customers could experience a power outage.

Officials recommend charging any devices you may need before the storm starts.

United Illuminating said they're making early preparations for the incoming storm.

“Storms never come at a convenient time, and this storm is no different heading into the holiday weekend, but UI’s employees are answering the call to service, and are focused and committed on ensuring we are fully mobilized and prepared to respond to these storm conditions, with the safety and security of our customers our highest priority,” said UI President and CEO Frank Reynolds.

“We recognize the rain, wind and freezing temperatures may impact our customers’ and employees’ holiday plans, but it’s critical everyone is prepared as this storm moves in, and we are committed to responding to outage situations as quickly and efficiently as possible to help our communities stay safe and warm throughout the weekend," Reynolds continued.

They power company is advising residents to be prepared for power outages and have a plan in case of an extended loss of service.

Norwich Public Utilities is also preparing for the likelihood of power outages.

“We have been following this storm very closely all week and expect to have power outages on Friday. But we’ll have our personnel and equipment in place so that we can respond in a safe and efficient manner,” Chris LaRose, general manager of NPU, said in a statement. “We have a great team with years of experience in dealing with extreme weather, so we are ready to go.”

The company said NPU’s Customer Service Center will be closed at noon on Friday, but any service or outage-related issues can be reported to NPU at (860) 887-2555; Customer can also manage account transactions online via the NPU website www.norwichpublicutilities.com.

The NBC Connecticut meteorologists are tracking a storm that will bring pouring rain, potentially damaging winds and coastal flooding before temperatures crash right before the holiday weekend.

It will be pouring rain Thursday night into Friday. One to three inches of rain is expected.

By Friday morning, winds will increase. Gusts up to 50 to 65 mph are possible. The wind could cause power issues and property damage.

After that, temperatures will crash on Friday afternoon. It will go from near 60 to the teens by Saturday morning.
